Dear fellow drug policy reformers, marijuana consumers, producers and distributors, a new development and what I sincerely hope will be a successful tool in ending the drug war has just been added to the drug policy reform arsenal. It's Barry Cooper's Never Get Busted Again! video and website.
From the website,
Barry is an eight year veteran beginning his Texas law enforcement career as a police dispatcher for the Gladewater Police Department. He was soon hired by the Big Sandy Police Department where he trained his own narcotic detector dog and soon became one of the top highway interdiction officers in East Texas. Although Barry had less than five miles of highway to practice seizing narcotics, he held a county record of nearly one- hundred drug arrests and a record marijuana seizure.
Barry was quickly recognized and contacted by the Permian Basin Drug Task Force located in Odessa, Texas which had jurisdiction in nineteen surrounding counties. Here Barry received extensive training and worked joint operations with the ATF, DEA, FBI, U.S. Military and Border Patrol. Barry is well trained in all interdiction methods including undercover operations, reversal operations, search warrants, K-9's, traffic stops and public transportation narcotics interdiction (buses and airplanes.)
Barry's talents were soon noticed and he began traveling the State of Texas teaching narcotics interdiction classes to various police academies and agencies. The standard agreement between Barry and the host agency was to pay wages and all expenses for a two or three day class which included an eight hour shift of Barry demonstrating his interdiction skills. If Barry failed to make a drug arrest in the eight hour shift, he forfeited all monies and the class was free. Barry never had to give any money back!
After two years with the Permian Basin Drug Task Force, Barry was contacted by his earlier employer, Gladewater Police Department, to become head of their narcotics division. Barry's desire to return home and bring his training back to East Texas resulted in a two year stint with the G.P.D. where Barry once again became the leading drug enforcement officer.
Political pressures including arresting the mayor's son for methamphetamine, a city councilman for marijuana, and outperforming the DEA and local task force caused Barry to quit law enforcement and become a successful entrepreneur. During his career, Barry had accumulated an impressive record of over 300 felony narcotics arrests, 500 misdemeanor narcotics arrests, the seizure of over fifty vehicles and approximately 1/2 million in cash and assets.Barry's sincerity is obvious when he speaks of the harm he caused so many during his tour of duty in the War on Drugs. Barry joins 6500 colleagues with his active membership in LEAP.CC (LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION) where other current and ex officers, politicians and judges travel to speak of the harmful side effects of the war on drugs.
Now Barry has come over to our side through the wonderful organization L.E.A.P. which stands for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition and is made up of 6500 current and former police officers, judges, lawyers, prosecutors and prison guards all peaking out about the massive harms of drug prohibition.
I haven't seen the video yet but will be purchasing a copy today. Please visit the website for more detailed information and to welcome Barry to the right side of the drug war.

Well Loretta, I guess you know by now what LEEP Executive Director, Jack Cole, had to say about Barry Cooper being a LEAP speaker:
“When former police officer Barry Cooper was accepted as a LEAP speaker the Executive Director and most Board members of LEAP were not aware of the fact that Mr. Cooper was planning to distribute a for-profit DVD titled, "Never Get Busted Again". Upon learning of the sale of the DVDs LEAP, which is an international nonprofit educational organization, held a board meeting where it was decided that LEAP cannot in any way be associated with this enterprise.”
“LEAP feels that Mr. Cooper could not speak for LEAP without his product automatically being associated with us. We cannot have that so we are no longer listing Barry Cooper as a LEAP speaker.”
And NORMAL Legal Counsel, Keith Stroup, had this to say:
“Let's not kid ourselves that this ex-narc is suddenly a champion for civil rights; he is just trying to make a fast buck. I would be cautious before inviting him to join LEAP or any other reform organization. We should learn what we can about beating the drug dogs, but we should not trust this scumbag who worked for years locking people like us up.”
Ouch! But let’s not kid ourselves; aren’t we ALL (including Keith Stroup and Jack Cole) trying to make a buck somewhere, somehow? It is possible that ex-narc Barry Cooper has seen his evil ways and is sincere about fighting / ending drug probation, still this Mr. Cooper scares me. However, I think a whole lot could be gained from this DVD, information that could not only save a lot of money, as his ad suggests, but perhaps save a life! Whether Cooper makes a buck or not, as well as his sincerity is a pretty mute point.
When you receive your copy, please give us a personal review and opinion on this DVD. Your recommendation to purchase or not would be extremely helpful and valuable.

There is a HUGE discussion going on in the drug policy reform community about all of this. It seems pretty evenly divided to me with half saying it has the potential to be a wonderful thing if it is legit and the other half saying that this guy has no right to profit from information that the public has already paid for. They also say that if he wanted to atone for his sins as a narc he would give the info away for free.
I, on the other hand, know first hand how difficult it is to be an activist and find funding for this work. If this guy is now on our side and is making this information available, and it is real information that could keep people out of jail (even if we have to pay for it) then it is a good thing.
Two things that bother me though.
1. This guy is/was on the LEAP speaking circuit and an active member of LEAP. However, LEAP never endorsed this video and he fraudulently claimed that they did.
2. He did the same thing with NORML. Yesterday on the nevergetbusted.com site there was a paragraph about NORML and High Times endorsements as well as LEAP. He also mentioned in a video that he worked with NORML. Today the references to NORML and LEAP are gone.
The hairs on the back of my neck are starting to stand up a little bit.
I do plan to review the DVD on my site as soon as I get it. It may take up to 6 weeks to get it. I would advise everyone to wait until I have seen what is on the DVD before dropping any cash on it. In fact, if it is good, I will plan a showing for people on my lists and in my network of people around the state where I will allow copies to be made for free provided the equipment to do so is available.
Hey Loretta,
I've been checking your site just about every day for the review on 'Never Get Busted Again' from the link http://nallforgovernor.blogspot.com/2006/12/never-get-busted-is-here.html
I was hoping you could post an update on the status of your review, if you had received the DVD yet and so forth. I'm sure i speak for most, but we're dying to hear about it.
Cheers
Hi,
I am still waiting on my copy of the DVD to arrive. I ordered it the day they went on sale and have not received it yet. According to the "Barry's Buds" newsletter the information in the video was leaked to the local police depts in TX and so he had to do some re-filming. Then there was some other delay that I don;t recall right off hand.
Keep checking back. I promise that review as soon as I get the video.
