Barry Cooper Threatens Loretta Nall

I got this lovely threat from Barry Cooper of Never Get Busted shame in my email a week or so ago and I thought I would share it with my readers so that they can see what kind of person Mr. Cooper really is. He has a new DVD coming out and apparently my opinion of his first DVD has cost him something. Money maybe?

Loretta,

Since the release of my DVD, I have:

1) Added a page to my site mapping locations citizens are likely to
encounter drug interdiction efforts.

(Great! Now the cops will just move to an unmapped location)

2) Added a message board allowing citizens to ask questions and get
answers free.

(I didn't find your information to be helpful so I don't see how you answering questions on your own message board is useful)

3) Donated over 500 copies of my DVD to various drug reformation
groups and citizens.

(Superb! Now 500 groups and all of their mebers have access to bad information that isn't likely to help them escape arrest in a police encounter)

4) Testified as an expert witness to a K-9 false alerting. This was
done in the 401st District Court in Collins County, Texas.

(How much did yiou get paid to testify as an expert witness?)

5) Filed a Federal Court Lawsuit naming 14 defendants including a
Judge, attorney, and Sheriff's Department.

(And?)

It is clear I am the person I said I was in the beginning. You have
attacked me over and over and have placed a bias and damaging review
containing lies for all to read. Yours is the only bad review since
the release of my film. My DVD is high quality, entertaining and full
of good information. I recently learned my DVD will be released in
September to be purchased at Hastings, Barns & Nobles, Virgin Records
and many other local record shops. This is more evidence I have a good
product. Your intentions are clear when your own words are read:

"I don't think his insertion of his wife into this discussion has
anything to do with police psychology. I think it has way more to do
with the fact that most drug policy reformers and organizations are
about to take my lead and rip this fucktard to shreds."

You are hurting the drug reformation community by attacking another
drug reformationist who is sincere about ending our unjustified drug
laws!

Consider this letter my final attempt to make peace with you. If you
do not take down your review and insist to others who have posted your
review to do the same, I will file suit against you in my hometown
court. If you are willing, email your intentions and I will provide
the addresses your review is posted.

I hope this can be solved without litigation but am comfortable to
solve this however you choose.

Regards,

Barry N. Cooper

Now, I've always heard that cops were the stupidest people on earth when it comes to the law and I'd have to say that Mr. Cooper has proven that with this threat. Is he still a cop? Maybe not...but, he sure acts like one by using threats and intimidation to try and get his way.

There is no way I can be sued for expressing my opinion about a product any more that Siskel & Ebert could have been sued for their movie reviews or a food critic can be sued for their restaruant reviews. However, if you would like to pursue it anyway, please keep in mind that I, under discovery, will have access to all of your records and financial information and we will get to see just where your money to finance the project came from. Bet that'll be an interesting read.

I bought the DVD, reviewed it, found it lacking in every way and posted my review publicly...which I have every right to do. I am a private citizen who is unhappy with a product I purchased. Simple as that. And, by the way Barry, where is my $50 some odd dollars you said you would refund?

As to lies....there are no lies contained in my review of your DVD. Just my opinions based on the content of said DVD. I'd ask that as far as lies go that people please remember that this guy claimed in the beginning to have the endorsements of NORML and LEAP and those were lies. BIG ONES. Also, keep in mind that the first orders of this DVD (which was suppossedly to help keep people from GETTING BUSTED were mailed to buyers with NEVER GET BUSTED in bold print in the return address. Now, let me ask you....who would be most likely to buy a DVD entitled Never Get Busted? Why, people who wanted to avoid getting busted, of course. How could anyone with even half a brain make such a horrendous mistake? Was it really a mistake?

So, NO BARRY, I will not remove my original review of Never Get Busted. I don't care what you claim other people have said or how many good and bad reviews you have gotten. After all, there is no way for consumers to independently verify your claims and, everyone thinking of purchasing any of your stuff should have the opportunity to read the "only negative review" out here according to you. I contend that it is FAR from the only negative review. I've seen a few on well respected and trusted drug policy reform sites.

And just a tad of advice. You have made yourself a public figure by offering a controversial product for sale, therefore you must grow thicker skin and learn to deal with criticism by some other way that threats and intimidation. I know that since you were/are a cop that perhaps that is the only way you know. But out here in the real world of drug policy reform things go much smoother if you learn the art of diplomacy.

Additionally, stop sending me email before I SUE YOU for HARASSMENT!

Have a nice day! :)

Apparently Mr. Cooper is counting on the fact that your readers (and yourself) have no access to Google, Yahoo or any other Internet search engine. Either that or he thinks we're all too lazy or too stupid to do a simple search.

After a quick internet search, I found the following bad reviews for Never Get Busted Again, which would seem to dispute Mr. Cooper's claims that yours was the only unfavorable review. (Perhaps Mr. Cooper mistakenly thinks we have to ask HIS consent before performing this search? Not that it matters, since Mr. Cooper would obviously take his own advice and give the consent readily.)

Please note that Mr. Cooper felt compelled to ALSO harass these reviewers, so he also waives his right to plead ignorance about them:

http://stopthedrugwar.org/speakeasy_main/2007/feb/12/never_get_busted_again_video_cou

However, it is fair to say that no bad or controversial reviews made it to the NGBA Web site, where the reviewers are NOT identified by name, only an initial, and all seem to think the video is the greatest thing since sliced bread:

http://www.nevergetbusted.com/reviews.php

So, in summation, it's fair to say that no bad reviews were cherry picked for the promotional Web site. And that's about it.

-- By the way, there are plenty more examples of people who were NOT thrilled with Mr. Cooper's video if you scroll down and read blog comments or do your own internet searches. Feel free to explore on your own and understand how credible Mr. Cooper is.

That guy's a loser. I think I'll re-post your review and see how he likes it.

Sorry, I couldn't resist adding another classic link, this one from a current officer. Most of it bashes Cooper for "selling out" his former officers, but it also points out his duplicity, deception and complete lack of credibility:

"In reference to the "Never Get Busted Again" story, it is quoted by Barry Cooper's one-time boss: "He is perhaps the best narcotics officer in the country and he was even better than he says he was" and "he was probably the best narcotics officer in the state and maybe the country during his time with the (drug) task force."

These are the most ridiculous statements I have ever read in my law enforcement career. Apparently, Mr. Finley and Cooper were not looking beyond their own West Texas world.

I have been in narcotics, working criminal interdiction on the interstate (in Texas) for over 17 years and have never heard of Barry Cooper. Out of all the well-deserving officers who I could name that would fit these criteria, Cooper is not one of them.

In fact, if he has seized only $500,000 in drugs and assets during his career, then he has not even scraped the barrel compared to what other officers have seized and are continuing to seize.

Criminal interdiction officers recover more than $500,000 in drugs and assets every year. Of all the narcotics officers I know in Texas, Cooper's name was not known around Southeast Texas."

I don't even think this asshole, is worth your effort to defend yourself here. You are clearly in the right, he has absolutely no ground to stand on, and I think you do good just to point at his groin and laugh. Keep fighting the good fight.

What a pathetic snibbling fucktard! He should know and realize that everyone is entitled to their opinion. What an idiot. He seems like another crooked officer of the court to me (oops ex cop).

Nothing like a good ole' cartooney threat is there? Give 'em hell, Loretta!

Cooper, if you are reading this, you're a butt munch. Why don't you just quit belly aching and accept the fact that she, among MANY others, found your "pearls of wisdom" to be more like turds of ignorance. Chill out, cowboy.

babby coopers video basicly tells people to throw out there civil liberties and give consent to a seach, wich makes it impossible to have the resulting search thrown of court since you gave consent.. i also have a hard time beliving he is pro legalization since his whole money making scheme is centered around the war on drugs. how many people would buy his video if drugs were legal? no one.. i think barry is just angry because you have made some very valid and constructive points about the flaws of his video.. if he realy cared about helping people he would have done the video for free or donated all the profits to norml.. instead hes making a living off the victims of the drug war yet again, and now we are paying out of our pockets for the privlage instead of with tax dollars. i am a member of leap and norml and i found it appaling that he would use these organizations fine reputations to peddle his wares.. all i have to say is shame on you mister cooper, shame on you..

i always used to cringe at the term "fucktard". i guess i never full got it until you blogged about this guy. what a fucktard. you're a great writer by the way.

Wow, what a fucktard. I see his thorough lack of knowledge about the law continues.

First he is somehow completely unaware that refusal to allow a search is not reasonable grounds for a search.

Now he shows his ignorance about civil suits.

Hey fucktard, here's a hint. You can't sue someone any ol' place. You have to sue in a court with jurisdiction, and that is, with few exceptions, the court of the defendant.

He's suing you for giving him a bad review? Either there are some very strange US laws I'm not familiar with, or he thinks you're really dumb.

Agreed with the review - agreed with this piece - regretfully have to correct that restaurant reviewers can in fact get sued it's nuisance litigation designed to shut up critics. The Scientologists are infamous for it.

Could fucktard win? No, probably not, but he could be a miserable prick dragging you though an expensive process to try to wear you down. It's called libel chill and its a big problem for both amateur and professional journalists.

Deliberate(?) disinformation like Cooper's should be fought, but be aware that lawfare is like any warfare - one side tries to grind down the other.

Keep in mind a false accusation of having written something legally actionable is itself slander.

Barry Cooper is probably one of the biggest idiots on the face of the earth! He obviously has some mental problems as well. He shows many traits of a sociopath and seems to be suffering from a severe case of narcissistic personality disorder. I can't believe that anyone would even give him the time of day. I personally have a hard time believing anything that comes out of his mouth. He obviously feels threatened by you though because why else would your opinion bother him so much. Threatening to sue you only proves his ignorance too. He seems to be a real hot head as well. He has been arrested more than once for his violent behavior. I think it is only a matter of time before he ends up behind bars because that is exactly where someone like him belongs! I think you guys summed it up pretty well...WHAT A FUCKTARD!!!!
