AL Medical Marijuana Bill Moving Fast

UPDATE: WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE CALLS TO THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE AT THIS TIME.

All,

I got word yesterday that we can expect our bill to be in the que tomorrow (Thursday) and that we may have it in judiciary committee by next Wednesday. This is moving a lot faster than I had anticipated, which is good. What we are trying to do at this point is have it passed out of committee on a voice vote and save patient testimony for when it goes to the house floor for a full debate. However, if this bill comes up in committee next Wednesday I want each and every one of you packing out the committee room at the state house. I will order our STOP ARRESTING PATIENTS shirts today so that we will send our message loud and clear without saying a word.

Today Christie O'Brien and I will be contacting members of the judiciary committee and figuring out if we have the votes to pass this. I would also like for each and every one of you (starting Thursday) to contact them as well and ask them to support the Michael Phillips Compassionate Care Act when it goes to committee. Phone calls are best and the sooner you make them the better. We do not have a bill number yet but we will hopefully have one by tomorrow. If any of you need a phone skit let me know and I will send you one.

Here are the members of the judiciary committee and their contact info with notations about who needs to be called and who doesn't.

Please let us know the results of your phone calls to the committee members. Who's in favor, who's not, who might be able to be persuaded, who can't be.

What is the number of the bill? I want it so I can ask my representative about supporting it. Maybe if you email it to me I’ll know sooner than the next time I visit here.

The bill will be introduced today by Rep. Patricia Todd and we will have a bill number tomorrow. I will email it to you as soon as I get it.

That's great news jl. However, we learned today that our bill is likely to pass out of committee so we don't need anymore calls to the judiciary committee right now.

What I do need from you is to call your rep's in Montgomery. I'm guessing that might be Mike Hubbard in the house and Ted Little in the Senate if you are in Auburn. Ask them to support HB434 the Michael Phillips Compassionate Care Act when it comes to the house floor for a vote.

The whole Phelps thing is disgusting. I mean this kid represented his country in an amazing way at the Olympics and broke nearly every swimming record in the world and they want to throw him in jail and wreck his entire life over green leafy plant substance.

But, what do we expect from a country that drug tests soldiers before they are sent to Iraq, sends them to fight anyway if they test positive and then punishes them if they are lucky enough to make it back from war alive?

darn,, I didn't mean for my email address to be visible to spiders. I think I've corrected that by changing my blogger acct, but any way you can alter how that post appears above? Thanks.

I'm now a vocal supporter and will call tomorrow. This Michael Phelps business has really pissed me off. I know that compassion for the medically needy is a much better reason to get involved, but I'm really upset at Richland County, SC's political grandstanding.

No problem banjolawyer.

Let's remember whos supports this bill and who doesn't and let's contribute to those who did and against those who didn't come election time.

I live in a county where illegal gambling(or charity bingo, as they like to call it) is out of control. But for some reason our politicians allow this to continue but when it comes to something like medical marijuana, it seems like it is some kind of moral dilemma for our politicians and law makers to make up their minds. These people who are resposible(or irresponsible) for voting and passing bills in this state seem to be blind. I don't understand why our state's politicians can't seem to make their minds up on something that could help people? Maybe if we would've found a way for these same people to fill their pockets from medical marijuana, just like bingo, then it would've been legalized years ago.
