DAME Magazine: Alabama vs. Dildo's

The article in DAME Magazine about the Sex Toys for Troy King is now available online.

Alabama vs. Dildos
Attorney General Troy King stands hard against stimulators

By David Holthouse
Published: Dec 10, 2007

Last November 15th, UPS delivered a box to Alabama Attorney General Troy King. Inside was a “Ms. Piglet” blow-up sex doll. “The Original Inflatable Party Pig” was a gift from Loretta Nall, 33, a popular Alabama blogger, Libertarian activist and former gubernatorial candidate (“Vote Nall, Y’all”) who spearheaded a “Sex Toys for Troy King” drive in protest of Alabama’s “Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act.” That law criminalizes the sale of dildos, clitoral vibrators or any other “…device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs.

“What’s next, knobby cucumbers?” says Nall.

According to the actual language of the law, sex toys are obscene because they promote a “prurient interest in autonomous sex” through “the pursuit of orgasm by artificial means.” Its penalties are stiff. While selling a handgun to a child is a trivial crime in Alabama punishable by no more than a $500 fine, violators of the dildo ban are subject to one year of prison or hard labor as well as a $10,000 fine.

In other words, Alabama lawmakers deemed that G-spot stimulators in the hands of consenting adults are more of a threat to public safety and welfare than Glock .45s in the hands of children.

“The difference is, firearms are not inherently immoral,” says Rev. Dan Ireland, executive director of the Alabama Citizens Action Program, a coalition of conservative Baptist preachers and activists who claim to serve as “Alabama’s moral compass.”

“There are moral ways and immoral ways to use a firearm,” says Ireland, whose organization is clamoring for stringent enforcement of the dildo ban. “There is no moral way to use one of these devices [sex toys].”

Here is Dan Ireland's email address if anyone would like to inform him that he does not serve as a "moral compass" for every citizen of this state. I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. After all, everyone needs a good dose of reality once in a while.

Many thanks to David Holthouse and DAME Magazine for this story. Still waiting on the one in Rolling Stone. Was talking to Peter Wilkinson from RS just a few minutes ago about the Webster Alexander Principal story. Hope they decide to bust that predatory fuck-wad in the nuts with another scathing RS article. Didn't mention to Peter the Troy King blurb slated for the Desk of National Affairs because he isn't the one who wrote the piece. Will update everyone on that one when I get new info.

Actually, most of the uses I can think of for sex toys are moral, by any sensible definition of the word. What consenting adults do to or with their own genitals cannot be immoral. I suppose you could kill someone with a heavy enough dildo and enough aggression, though.

Besides, putting a gun in the hands of a child seems to me to not give you the best chance that it will be used in a moral way. Kids aren't generally known for consistently making the best decisions.

This kind of idiotic rhetoric is exactly what happens when dipsticks go around claiming that millenia-old fairy tales are their basis for morality instead of using their own brains.

Kansas specifically targets women with a law that somehow makes it illegal for Trojan to sell their vibrating rings, etc. here. There are sex stores that have similar, multiple use items for a higher price. However, these adult stores are being targeted and driven out slowly by new zoning laws and obscenity charges. Items such as Trojan's Elexa vibrating ring (specifically designed for a woman's pleasure) would usually be sold next to the condoms in a grocery store, convenience store, or even a pharmacy. Since they're not, every time I go into one of these stores and happen to wander near the condoms, I make a point of yelling loudly about Kansas discriminating against women and colorfully describing the purpose of the missing item, just for the purpose of public education. I've found that about 5:30 pm in a grocery store seems to be the "best" time to do this.

I am really looking forward to our legislative session in Alabama this year. What with the editorial cartoon from the Mobile Press-Register, a friend who has agreed to dress up in a pig costume and stand in at any press conference related to this matter, Rep. John Rogers sponsoring the bill to repeal the stupid-ass law and the certainty that I will be able to come face to face with Dan Ireland...man I can't wait!

Hey Kansas...I love the idea of "5:30 p.m. public education"...great stuff!

Ok...can I just say that I will be proud to be in attendance with you at the legislative sessions this year.
This state has soooo many other things that should take priority over this ridiculous sex toy thing. Umm...like our schools for one. How silly it is for the time to be wasted on such nonsense! What adults do with sex toys is no one's business but their own. I don't understand how this Reverend can even remotely compare sex toys to children with guns. I'm so glad we have people like you in Bama Loretta to set these fools straight. ;)

We all must be protected from the IMMENSE dangers of "'AUTONOMOUS' sex" and the "Pursuit of orgasm by ARTIFICIAL means". LOL!!!
--- Our country's birth rates will plummet, AND . . . we'll ALL end up with hairy palms and going INSANE . . . LOL!!!
---
What does 'AUTONOMOUS' mean, anyway ? ? ?
LOL!!!

Dan Ireland, where's your proof text? Even given Biblical morality, I fail to see how a dildo is ipso facto immoral if you're using it on your wife to save your marriage. That might be as unfortunate as having to blow away a perp, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
