Mexico Legalizes Personal Possession of Drugs

Mexico legalizes small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin

The maximum amount of marijuana for "personal use" under the new law is 5 grams—the equivalent of about four joints. The limit is a half gram for cocaine, the equivalent of about 4 "lines." For other drugs, the limits are 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams for LSD.

Mexico has emphasized the need to differentiate drug addicts and casual users from the violent traffickers whose turf battles have contributed to the deaths of more than 11,000 people since President Felipe Calderon took office in late 2006.

Now if only Americans were as smart as Mexicans. Alas, I'm afraid we are not.

Whoa, those are pretty big joints.

I just heard about this myself. Very positive step. They really do need to make production legal so they can get it out of the hands of these violent gangs and thugs. I think people think the drugs themselves are what are causing the violence, but it's the fact that the drugs cost so much being on the black market and also that there is no justice system to regulate commerce and competition that's driving the violence. Instead of sane, rational producers in a legal marketplace, you've got violent gangs running the production and distribution. Until society is willing to just allow people to produce the stuff within a legal market framework, drug violence will continue.

I smoke 2 joints before I smoke 2 joints and then I smoke two more.

Never been to Mexico so I can't help you with the other.

sixstring: just go down to the market and find a vendor selling pipes. Then ask the vendor if he's got anything to put in it. Don't forget to haggle a little. ;)

Thanks Brandon. VERY sound advice!

The locals seem to be unaware of the new law. There has not been that much media coverage.

I wonder how it works. Do they give out warning tickets?
